The Indian women’s hockey team began their title defense perfectly with a 4-0 win over Malaysia on Monday. Sangita Kumari (8’, 55’), Preeti Dubey (43’), and Udita (44’) wrapped the game with goals as India created lots of chances and defended well to earn three points.
In the other game, South Korea played a tough Japan and drew 2-2 in the first round. It was Japanese captain Saki Tanaka who scored the first goal of the game as early as the 5th minute, while Mihyang Park leveled for Korea 12 minutes later through a corner penalty. Natsumi Oshima again scored from a penalty corner to hand Japan the lead in the third quarter but Yujin Lee’s 57th-minute strike made it Japan’s turn to feel the pinch, with the match ending in a tense draw.
