Klopp hopeful Salah will agree new Liverpool deal

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said on Tuesday that Salah should agree a new contract to stay at Anfield past the end of this season.

“I hope he stays.  He is an excellent footballer, an excellent human being, an excellent sportsman, the best representative your nation could have. So I want him to stay at Liverpool.’ Klopp answered a question on Salah from an Egyptian journalist at a press conference in Austria.

Klopp was unveiled as Red Bull’s global soccer chief, in which he will lead the energy drinks group’s football division.

The German takes over after quitting Liverpool at the end of last season after almost nine years as manager.

Red Bull owns clubs in a number of other countries including Klopp’s hometown club RB Leipzig in Germany, and just took over a minority stake in French second-tier club Paris FC.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have done just fine without Klopp, as they sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League and at the top of the Champions League under his successor Arne Slot.

Klopp said that it was time to leave Anfield and he did not miss the rigmarole of club administration, once again.

‘I am very much glad I don’t go,’ he said.

“It is awesome that they are doing well. I am happy for them. So I watch every game I can.

“It is great football.  You don’t need to be Liverpool if you are not following the show but you need to be watching Liverpool because this is just the best football, maybe the best balanced in the world right now”.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss also said he expected Salah’s teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold to sign extension clauses too, both of whom have contract runs that end in the season too.

‘I am so glad I am not the head there, having to answer these questions,’ he sighed.

“I personally would love all three of them to get extensions but, I don’t know, they didn’t tell me.

Asked if he could attempt to sign any of them for the Red Bull empire, which also owns the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer, he laughed: I guess so.

“Oh yeah.  Virgil I’m sure would prefer to get another five at Liverpool and then play 41 to 44 for New York Red Bulls because he is probably stupid about US football.

“Oh ya know, Mo I would love to but we can’t pay him honestly.

‘I’m just really happy I am not in it anymore.
