Barcelona claim 28th LaLiga title after 2-0 win at Espanyol

Barcelona claimed their 28th La Liga title on Thursday by defeating Espanyol, claiming the title after a city derby win and achieving a seven-point buffer with two matches left to play.

Reeling from a Sunday loss where they fell 4-3 to Barcelona, Real were in dire need of victory themselves. Now, they have to win their last three matches, and Barca need to earn no more than one point for Real to have any chance of Barcelona winning the title.

The Madrid side’s slim title hopes were all but dashed after Lamine Yamal netted a stunning curling effort in the 53rd minute. Ayao assisted Fermin Lopez, allowing him to secure the victory by scoring from within the box five minutes in stoppage time.

Crowned champions as Hansi Flick’s squad jumped to 85 points, seven ahead of last year’s champions Real, while Atletico Madrid sits third with 70 points. It marks the end of an astonishing first season at Barcelona for manager Hansi Flick, who had led his team to win La Liga and Copa Del Rey in a single season.

The Catalan side announced that the league winners will be presented with the trophy on Friday during a special celebration held in the city.
