India claimed their third men’s T20 World Cup title on Sunday with an emphatic 96-run defeat of New Zealand in a one-sided final for a record $2.34 million tournament prize.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the world’s richest cricket board, confirmed the extra payout for India in tribute to their win and described it as a sum about $3 million more than his tournament’s total prize pool of $11.25 million.
“The Board commends the players, support staff and selectors once again on this historic achievement and wishes them continued success going forward,” the BCCI said in a statement.
Last year, the BCCI had also showered a cash bonanza of $6.72 million on the Champions Trophy-winning Indian team, which is now three times more than the $2.24 million they got to lift the title.
Three-times T20 World Cup champion, India captain Suryakumar Yadav said the next ambitious target was to win a gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
