Dubai Duty Free Tennis: Peyton Stearns breaks Tunisian hearts

Entering centre court at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships as a considerable underdog with only one WTA trophy on her record Peyton Stearns faced Ons Jabeur who broke new ground as the first Arab player to reach a Grand Slam final on Monday evening.
The 23-year-old American stepped up with fearless tennis to defeat the Tunisian 7-6 (8/6) 6-4 which advanced her to the next round.

The world number 46 emerged victoriously from a first set tie-break won by a narrow margin to prevent Jabeur from mounting a second set comeback in their WTA Tour debut match.

Despite requiring medical assistance for a thigh injury Stearns maintained his focus and continued playing well enough to secure a round of 32 match against Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng.

During the post-match on-court interview Stearns expressed her happiness about staying committed to the match and fighting hard for her victory.

Ons plays exceptional tennis and demonstrates great sportsmanship which makes matches against her challenging yet I anticipated performing well in this match.

The centre court spectators experienced disappointment when Jabeur lost in straight sets after returning to play following an extended injury break.

Wildcard Sorana Cirstea from Romania defeated former runner-up Daria Kasatkina who was seeded tenth 6-1 6-4 while Anastasia Potapova dismantled 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3 6-0 and Moyuka Uchijima from Japan eliminated Jelena Ostapenko who was runner-up at the Qatar Open last week with a 6-3 6-3 victory.

After winning the Qatar Open against Ostapenko, Amanda Anisimova suffered a first-round defeat to Kessler McCartney with scores of 6-2 6-3 in Dubai.

McCartney demonstrated excellent performance during today’s match. I faced a difficult transition during the match. According to Anisimova the physical challenge of competing in her first Dubai match 48 hours after her Doha final victory made it difficult to regain her game.

The 17-year-old Russian sensation Mirra Andreeva proved too powerful for Elina Avanesyan when she defeated the Armenian player with scores of 6-2 and 6-1 in a one-sided match.
