Dubai: Win or lose, we will always be there for New Zealand, say these Kiwi expats

Journalists from India filled the press box at the Dubai International Stadium when India played their inconsequential Champions Trophy Group A match.

On Sunday, supporters clad in Indian blue jerseys transformed the stands into a festive atmosphere to support their team after taking out Kiwi wicket.

A small number of New Zealand supporters courageously faced the sea of blue-clad fans.

Craig Henderson from the UAE who came to the stadium together with fellow Kiwis Jeremy Manning and John Larkins vowed continued support for their team in every game.

Five thousand Kiwis make their lives across the UAE. Henderson explained that New Zealanders consistently see themselves as underdogs in every sport because the country’s size limits their opportunities in cricket, football, rugby and table tennis.

We will support the Kiwis no matter what happens because their performance doesn’t influence our attendance. Their victories or defeats don’t matter because our support remains constant.

Henderson explained his reasons for being a fortunate cricket fan as he lives in Abu Dhabi.

He expressed his fortune at having watched the Black Caps compete in the UAE on 20 different occasions before discussing his top memory supporting New Zealand in the UAE.

My belief remains that New Zealand’s finest Test win was the four-run victory against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in 2018.

Pakistan needed 46 runs to win with six wickets remaining but our New Zealand team mounted a comeback. That was an incredible Test match!”

The most unforgettable moment for fans remains New Zealand reaching the 1992 World Cup semifinals through their remarkable attacking cricket style.

I consider myself fortunate to have witnessed those beautiful World Cup moments. As a representative from a lesser populated nation he explained that such places must operate beyond typical boundaries.

Henderson explained why referring to New Zealand merely as a rugby country is inaccurate because he fell in love with cricket after watching Richard Hadlee, Ian Smith and Martin Crowe during his childhood.

He explained New Zealand excels beyond rugby because the country secured victories in the past three America’s Cups (a prestigious sailing competition).

New Zealand demonstrates strong performance across various sports disciplines. New Zealand’s identity extends beyond rugby because the country excels in various sports. The media tries to convince you that New Zealand is solely a rugby nation.

Win or lose, Kiwi pride stays strong! New Zealand expatriates based in Dubai demonstrate steadfast support for their national team.
