Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: To every detail you need to know about the ninth Women’s T20 World Cup that will take place in the United Arab Emirates from October 3 to October 20.

For the ninth iteration of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, all the arrangements have been made. The venue of the tournament has now changed from Bangladesh to UAE and it commences today. Matches will be played in Dubai and Sharjah.

Here are 10 things you must know about the T20 World Cup:

  • While the men’s tournament has been increased in the number of participant teams from 2024, the women’s event is capped at 10 at the moment. In Group A there are Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. The second group consists of Bangladesh, England, Scotland, South Africa and West Indies.
  • One of India is in the tougher of the two groups consisting of women teams Australia Sri Lanka New Zealand and Pakistan. The first match is between India and New Zealand on a Friday (Oct 4) followed by Pakistan on a Sunday (Oct 6). Then comes a reprise of the Asia Cup finals against Sri Lanka liner on (Oct 9) These three matches are played in Dubai and the honeymoon is against Australia. Or, to put it more accurately the rest in Sharjah on the 13th of Oct.
  • With only two teams progressing from each group into the semifinals (and Australia almost guaranteed to be one of those two from this group) one will consider India not making any mistakes in the early rounds.
  • This is the 9th edition of the tournament & Australia have been the champions in as many as 6. this being the last 3 times. The presence of India in the final of this inaugural tournament in 2009 was the only time BBC Broadband service was launched. It was in the same 2016 when the tournament was held in England that the most Caribbean islands cricket championship was nabbed.
  • It will be the first ICC tournament where women will be awarded the equivalent prize money as men. The USD 2.34million will go to the winners of the tournament, which was previously USD 1 million in 2023 when Australia triumphed over South Africa. This time, that number will be shattered by the runners-up, who will now receive USD 1.17 million. The outcome was in July 2023 and shall apply to this edition of the event.
  • The tournament will also have 10 umpires and three match referees, which includes only female officials, wth GS Lakshmi (the final match referee of 2023 too) and umpire Vrinda Rathi of India. The Decision Review System (DRS) will also be used throughout all 28 matches, where a Hawk-eye Smart Replay system will be used.
  • Mithali Raj, Anjum Chopra and WV Raman will be the Indian voices present in the commentary panel. World Cup winners Mel Jones, Lisa Sthalekar, Stacy Ann King, Lydia Greenway, and Carlos Brathwaite will be joined by Katey Martin and former Pakistan captain Sana Mir. Natalie Germanos, Ian Bishop, Kass Naidoo, Nasser Hussain, Alison Mitchell, Mpumelelo Mbangwa will also be broadcasting about the tournament.
  • The games will be available on the network Star Sports in India and to stream the games the app Disney+ Hotstar will be used. The day fixtures will commence at 3.30 PM IST and the evening fixtures will commence at 7.30 PM IST.
  • The tournament itself was played in Bangladesh but with this change the matches will be played in two locations within the UAE. The World Cup begins on 3 October at the corpus of the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. There is another venue which is Dubai International Stadium (DIS) where round robin matches will take place; the Final will be played in this venue as well on 20 October.
  • In the end, India took a plain-synthesized squad with no big surprises and only hopes to improve 1 place relative to 2020 when it first made it to the finals of the event. India started the World Cup with the feeling of winning both the warmup matches (vs WI and vs SA).
