IPL 2025: Suryakumar helps Mumbai crush Delhi to clinch playoff berth

Mumbai Indians cruised into the IPL playoffs courtesy Suryakumar Yadav’s 73-run innings and Naman Dhir’s electrifying performance, clinching victory over Delhi Capitals by 59 runs on Wednesday.

In the duel with Delhi for a singular playoff slot, Mumbai scored 180 runs losing 5 wickets and bundled out the opposition for 121 runs in Wankhede Stadium (home ground).

Mitchell Santner, a New Zealand spinnner, claimed 3/11 in his 4 overs for Mumbai while Jasprit Bamrah also took 3 wickets.

Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai said, “I can throw them (Santner and Bumrah) the ball whenever I want. They bring such control and perfection, which makes my job easy.”

With this matches victoru, five time champions Mumbai Indians become the newest contestants alongside Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru who advanced into the title playoffs on May 29.

Mathematically, Delhi are still in the race for the season, but, surrendering to a maximum of 15 points now makes it unrealistic. Conversely, Mumbai securing 16 points with adequate gaps in games unofficially makes them champions.

Mumbai struggling at the start gaining only 1 victory against the 5 losses in the first 5 games are on a winning streak of 7 out of the last 8 games.

The remaining group stage matches will determine the final placements, and the top two seeded teams will enjoy the benefit of two attempts to secure a place in the final on June 3.

After being put in to bat first, Mumbai’s innings got off to a shaky start with the dangerous Rohit Sharma getting out for only five runs. However, the home side recovered well in the second half of the innings.

India’s T20 skipper Suryakumar maintained his composure throughout the innings, striking seven boundaries and four sixes in his 43-ball innings. Dhir then came in and hit an explosive 24 runs off just eight balls to help boost the total.

Dhir belted Mukesh Kumar for 2 fours and two sixes in the 19th over, scoring 27 runs in total. Chameera was then taken on by Suryakumar, who completed the innings with an impressive 21 runs in the final over, bringing the total to 20 overs.

In Delhi’s case, Faf du Plessins was replacing the sidelined head captain before stating, “We really let the game slip in the last two overs.”

“Momentum exists in cricket, It last for example when we saw the counter punch at the end of the 17 or 18 overs and attempt to get 50 runs in the last two overs. We lost that momentum.”

Sri Lanka did not advance the way he thought India would based on recent performance. Du Plessis missed the mark with his assessment of the matches, especially in regards to their Australian recruit Mitchell Starc who was absent after the IPL thanks to the clash between India and Pakistan.

“This IPL Season was a surprise package for me. IPL restarted last Saturday and they have changed the schedule, so the international players have had to change their entire season plan,”.

“Suryakumar emerged as the team’s hope and managed to make a 55 run partnership with Tilak Varma after their top 3 batsmen got eliminated quickly. They facilitated Rohit with some of the seats where he has been rewarded with a stand in the stadium named after him. And they also changed the clothes of some of his fans to get them to wear whites in order to pay respect for his retirement from test captaincy.

Rohit fell for Mustafizur Rahman in 3rd over wherewith Suryak couldn’t Suryak was replaced by Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton”

“After the 2nd over I expected Du Plessis to get aggressively taken out but with the plan removed it left Delhi out of the chase”.

New Zealand’s Trent Boult jolted the home crowd to life when he managed to catch KL Rahul, who was performing well, for 11 runs. Shortly afterward, Jacks dismissed Abishek Porel for a single-digit score.

Partial collapses continued as Santner managed to grab two wickets in a single over to reduce the opposition batters, who had a pathetic innings lasting just 18.2 overs.

Suryakumar demonstrates remarkable skills – however, stay tuned for how Mumbai triumphed over Delhi with such ease, as they wanted in IPL 2025. Follow Sports Monks for the latest updates and news!
