Ravindra, Noor help Chennai down Mumbai in IPL blockbuster

On Sunday, New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra registered an unbeaten 65 runs to help the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secure victory by 4 wickets against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023 season opener.

Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad had a spectacular performance, returning with 4 wickets for 18 runs in 4 overs, aiding Super Kings in limiting Indians to just 155 runs in Chepauk stadium.

Post-the victory, Ravindra received praise for leading the team in the run chase; along with Ravindra, Gaikwad also made significant contributions with the bat, scoring 53 runs in 26 balls. Furthermore, Ravindra capped off the victory with 6 runs as Chennai finished the game with 5 balls remaining.

M.S. Dhoni, a former well-known Indian cricketer, is 43 years old and completed 18 straight years in the IPL. Dhoni still remains quite popular among IPL fans and had his share of entertaining the crowd when he joined the game late by another CSK fan favorite in the team.

The rivalry between Chennai and Mumbai runs deep as the two sides face off with 5 championship wins in the IPL since its inception in 2008.

Chennai elected to bowl first against Mumbai, and as it turns out, Gaikwad’s decision paid off. Ahmed alongside the other bowlers justified the bowler’s decision as he was able to get rid of Mumbai’s captain Rohit Sharma for a golden duck.

Ahmed trapped south African cricketer Rickelton for 13 runs when he successfully bowled him, causing the batter to base head to tumble down onto his stumps.

Ahmad picked up where Khaleel left off and got right away with the left arm wrist spin, claiming two wickets for 31 runs, including the very much in-form Tilak Varma.

Wickets continued to fall, but Deepak Chahar provided some lower order resistance with a useful 28, giving Chennai something to ponder.

Ravindra, the aggressive opener, annihilated the bowlers and scored a quickly compiled 67 runs for the second wicket with Gaikwad while Chennai looked set to achieve their target easily.

But Puthur, who had no prior state cricket experience, made his IPL debut memorable as he destroyed the Indian contingent of Gaikwad, Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda who are all international players from India.

Chennai’s innings did suffer a hiccup with Will Jacks removing Englishman Sam Curran for four; however, Ravindra steadied the ship with Jadeja, who was run out after scoring 17 in the second last over, while escorting the team home.

Fittingly Ravindra blasted Dhoni’s countryman Santner for six to claim victory, watching from the non-striker’s end as Dhoni had no time to trouble the scorers, failing to make an impact off the two balls faced.
