Team India slammed for one-venue selection in Dubai for Champions Trophy

India benefits from an “undeniable” advantage by playing all their Champions Trophy matches in Dubai while other teams must travel between venues in Pakistan and the UAE.

India declined to host Pakistan for the 50-over tournament due to security concerns and political tensions so they will be playing all their matches at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The rivalry between the competing teams persisted for over a month which endangered tournament scheduling until Pakistan’s cricket board reached a settlement agreement with the International Cricket Council.

The agreement requires Pakistan to compete at neutral venues for all ICC events in India until 2027.

The decision happened once Jay Shah who serves as the BCCI secretary assumed his role as ICC chairman during December at the Dubai headquarters of the ICC.

Former England cricketer and popular broadcaster Jonathan Agnew expressed his discomfort about India’s current treatment.

“This is wrong. When participating in international tournaments you cannot selectively participate in specific locations while avoiding others.

The current situation must end soon. It makes a farce of these tournaments.”

The playing conditions and pitch characteristics between Dubai and the Pakistani venues in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi show significant differences.

India scored its highest total of 244 to chase down 242 against Pakistan in Dubai where no dew has been reported during their first two matches on a slow pitch.

In Pakistan matches totals have reached much higher levels because dew factors in and Australia’s Josh Inglis scored an unbeaten 120 to reach 352 against England at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

‘Huge’ advantage

As an advantage India holds playing only in Dubai exists but in a hard-to-measure form according to me yet its benefits remain undeniable. Former England captain Michael Atherton inquired of Nasser Hussain about India’s Dubai playing advantage.

“They’re playing at just one venue. The team selection process can concentrate on Dubai’s playing conditions.

India and New Zealand have advanced to the semi-finals from Group A and will contest their final group game against one another in Dubai on Sunday. India has been scheduled to compete in their semi-final match in Dubai on March 4 regardless of their final position. The final match will occur in Lahore on March 9 unless India qualifies then it will move to Dubai.

An ankle injury prevented Pat Cummins from leading his Australian team in the eight-nation tournament previously known as the mini World Cup but he still participated in the discussion about the event.

Cummins explained to Yahoo Australia that the tournament continuation is positive but provides India with a major home ground advantage.

The team already demonstrates impressive strength compounded by their advantage of playing all matches on familiar ground.

England captain Jos Buttler dismissed the controversy surrounding the tournament setup. According to Butler the schedule did not offer India an advantage.

The tournament stands out because it hosts matches here while one team plays elsewhere but I don’t find this concerning at present.

Team India is under fire because they selected Dubai as the sole venue for all matches during the Champions Trophy. Subscribe to Sports Monks to stay updated with the latest news!
