The stand-in captain Steve Smith announced that Travis Head will take on the role of Usman Khawaja’s opening partner during the first Test match against Sri Lanka at Galle on Wednesday.
According to Smith Sam Konstas who showed strong performance as an opener in his series debut against India may play in the middle order now that Head has been promoted.
Smith recognized Head’s effective performance against spin during the 2023 Australian tour of India as potentially beneficial for the upcoming two-Test series against a spin-dominant Sri Lanka.

After Trav reaches the top position the team lineup will remain stable according to Smith.
The team structure will remain largely unchanged from that arrangement. The selectors expressed approval over Head’s performance during his opportunity in India.
He took to the new ball aggressively, scored fast and applied immediate pressure so the strategy seems similar.
Australia won back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade thanks to Head’s scoring leadership during their 3-1 series win earlier this month.
Australia chose Travis Head’s extensive experience over Konstas’ seemingly indifferent aggressive style despite his immediate impact during the last two Tests against India.

Matthew Kuhnemann the left-arm spinner has received a fitness clearance.
The spin challenge awaits Australia in Galle as they play two Tests while already qualified for the World Test Championship final against South Africa.
Prabath Jayasuriya will lead Sri Lanka’s spin-focused team to attack at a venue where the pitch begins turning from the very first session.
Dhananjaya de Silva is expected to return for his team despite his side strain recovery while Pathum Nissanka will miss the game because of his groin injury.
