National record holder Praveen Chithravel who won a bronze medal at the Asian Games is aiming to secure gold at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
He plans to beat his national record of 17.37m during this season.
At the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022 Praveen Chithravel secured fourth place with a jump of 16.89m while his compatriots Eldhose Paul won gold and Abdulla Aboobacker claimed silver.
Bermuda’s Jah-Nhai Perinchief won the bronze.
My goals extend beyond just one event as I strive to compete in the Olympics and World Championship and participate in the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games among others. At the Asian Games I won a medal but then missed out on one by just 2cm at the Commonwealth Games.”

I earned medals both at the Asian Indoor Championships and the Youth Olympics. At the 2026 Asian Games I expect to win a medal but I am aiming to secure gold at the Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games are so intense that he cannot sleep properly.
The Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow between July 23 and August 2, 2026. The national record was set by Praveen Chithravel during a competition in Havana, Cuba in 2023.
I hold the national record at 17.37 but plan to surpass this record. My goal is to surpass the national record once more after achieving it in 2023 by aiming for another record-breaking performance in 2025.
“Currently our events include the World Indoor Championship followed by the Asian Championship and World Championship before I turn my attention to the Diamond Leagues,” stated Praveen Chithravel who secured a bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023 with a 16.68m jump.
The triple jumper from Tamil Nadu found his decision to pursue sports straightforward since his family members were involved in sports.
My uncle and father played Kabaddi as part of our family’s sports background. His studies do not reflect perfection but he feels more at ease when participating in sports.

I participated in Kabaddi until my father advised me to pursue individual sports when the timing felt right. The team game operates differently because not every participant joins you in each match. So individually you can make yourself only.”
He explained that the initial infrastructure was inadequate but improved facilities followed after his successful outcomes.
My village has no facilities but I participated in Zonal and District competitions in my state.
I entered a Chennai hostel while studying seventh standard at the age of 10 or 11 and received facilities at that time,” said the athlete from Thanjavur district.
