Jonathan Trott will be head coach of Afghanistan men till the end of 2025. The next match he will play is the ODI match of Afghanistan’s multi-format tour of Zimbabwe, but he will not be taking charge of the other formats for personal reasons. He’ll be replaced by Hamid Hassan, who will become the head coach and Nawroz Mangal as assistant.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has signed 12 months extension on Trott’s contract after a great 2024 for the team. Afghanistan limped into the World Cup semi-final for the first time ever in this calendar year with wins over New Zealand and Australia in the Group- and Super-Eights of the T20 tournament in West Indies and the USA. Since, they have beaten South Africa and Bangladesh in ODI series in Sharjah.

Next up for Afghanistan at the big world event is their debut Champions Trophy campaign next year. They got into the tournament after they ranked among the top eight sides on the 2023 ODI World Cup points table, winning matches against England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Trott first joined in July 2022, and his appointment ran for 18 months, and was renewed by a year in January 2024. Afghanistan have won 14 of the 34 ODIs and 20 of the 44 T20Is that they have played since his appointment.

Trott’s current trip with Afghanistan is his first in charge. He was an adviser for Scotland in the 2021 T20 World Cup. As a cricketer, he scored 3835 runs in 52 Test matches (44.08 on average) and was the star player for England’s 2010-11 away Ashes win. He scored 2819 runs on 51.25 average for ODI cricket with four hundreds and 22 fifties.
