U-19 Women World Cup: England book semi-final berth

The defending champions India secured a spot in the semifinals of the U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup with England advancing after defeating New Zealand by six wickets in Kuching on Monday.

The ball was dominated by Tilly Corteen-Coleman and Prisha Thanawala who took seven combined wickets that led New Zealand from 49 for no loss to 89 all out which resulted in England having to chase a modest target of 90.

The spin duo of Corteen-Coleman and Thanawala along with wicket-keeper Katie Jones’ strong glovework resulted in 10 New Zealand wickets falling for just 40 runs.

England reached their target with ease as openers Jemima Spence and Davina Perrin contributed 29 and 21 runs respectively while their side took just 11.4 overs.

England’s win guarantees their place in the top two spots of Super Six Group 2 with South Africa.

Kate Irwin and Emma McLeod opened their innings with the most impressive start for New Zealand during the tournament as their team began brightly in Borneo.

Before a rain delay interrupted their game, Irwin and McLeod reached 44 runs without losing a wicket after completing 7.3 overs. That moment became decisive because New Zealand’s momentum decreased after the restart until Trudy Johnson took advantage to dismiss Irwin through Phoebe Brett at mid-on in the subsequent over.

Johnson dismissed Anika Todd for five runs after which Brett took her own wicket before McLeod was stumped following an attempt to hit the England spinner down the ground.

New Zealand tried to stabilize their innings following the loss of three wickets for 11 runs yet Thanawala ensured their downfall with another devastating bowling performance. The spinner dismissed Eve Wolland for two runs and then caused New Zealand to continue their batting collapse by taking both Hannah Francis and Darcy-Rose Prasad in consecutive deliveries which left the team with a score of 79 for six.

England’s Corteen-Coleman completed the innings while New Zealand added only 10 runs during their last four wicket falls.

Brief Scores: New Zealand reached a final score of 89 while losing all ten of their batsmen across 20 overs.

England 90/4 in 11.4 overs Result: England won by six wickets after reaching 90 runs for the loss of four wickets in 11.4 overs.
